SHEET METAL MECHANIC

This is an Air Reserve Technician (ART) position. ARTs are part of the regular career civil service and enjoy all the benefits granted to Federal employees in the competitive civil service. **Qualifications:**
In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C for a Sheet Metal Mechanic, 3806. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the Sheet Metal Mechanic, 380. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of a Sheet Metal Mechanic without more than normal supervision. JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge of sheet metal shop mathematics. Knowledge of safety and environmental standards, regulations, and requirements. 2. Knowledge of axacetylene and tungsten inert gas welding and cutting equipment to perform minor heating , welding, and cutting operations. 3. Skill in formulating plans, patterns, and templates involving straight and curved edges or irregular curves, angles, and planes; in layout and pattern development (including geometric projection and triangulation); in fabrication complex items from a variety of materials such as galvanized or stainless steel, black iron, aluminum, copper sheet, magnesium, honeycomb material , and alloys; in using and maintaining a variety of metal shop tools, equipment, and measuring instruments; and in assembling, fabricating, and repairing sheet metal systems, components, and items. 4. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, sketches, and technical specifications. 5. Ability to inspect and evaluate structural damage to sheet metal systems sufficient to plan and accomplish repairs; to adapt to new technologies affecting sheet metal mechanic work; and to communicate both orally and in writing. OTHER SIGNIFICANT FACTS: 1. The work may require the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid driver's license may be required for the position. 2. May be required to train and/or guide lower graded employees. 3. May be required to be certified for working with and/or removing hazardous materials. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
