Job Description

This position is located in the Police Service at the James J. Peters, VA Medical Center, Bronx, NY. The work includes the operation of gasoline, diesel, or electronic powered wheeled vehicles to haul cargo and fuel, transport passengers, patients, or to tow or recover equipment. The vehicles re driven in restricted traffic environments on Government installations, over public roads and highways or under cross-country conditions.

**Qualifications:**
SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR (SCREEN-OUT) - A Selective Placement Factor (SPF) has been identified for this position. Selective Placement Factors (SPF) are a prerequisite to appointment and represent minimum requirements for the position. Applicants who do not meet the SPF are ineligible for further consideration. The Selective Placement Factor for this position is: A current, valid state-issued Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger endorsement is required for this position. NOTE: We cannot accept photographs, therefore please do not submit a copy of your license with your application package. If an interview is requested, you will be required to provide a copy of your current, valid state-issued Driver's License. PLUS (SCREEN OUT) Must have the ability to perform the work of a Motor Vehicle Operator without more than normal supervision. This ability would be demonstrated by experience that required a thorough understanding of and following all regulations and laws governing the operation of various types of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles to haul cargo and equipment, and transport passengers; and operate a variety of vehicles to include passenger buses and trucks. NOTE: Your resume must support your answer with detailed descriptions of work performed to receive credit. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The employee exerts moderate physical efforts in operating, turning, backing, controlling and coupling vehicles which carry heavy loads and a large number of people. Considerable effort may be required to change tires and make limited emergency repairs. Operators frequently handle objects weighing up to 20 pounds and occasionally handling of objects weighing over 50 pounds. Working Conditions: Vehicles are operated in all types of traffic and weather conditions on public roads and highways and there is exposure to the danger of serious accidents. The employee drives in heavy traffic and at highway speeds over complicated road and interchange systems. As determined by Facility needs, the Motor Vehicle Operator will work on irregular tours of duty such as 6:00am to 2:30pm, 8:00am to 4:30pm and 11:30am to 8:00pm. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). Applicants who appear to meet the screen out element are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated from consideration. The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements. While a specific length of training and experience is not required, your responses to the questionnaire must be supported by detailed descriptions of your experience on your resume. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
