Why You're Not Getting Interviews
(Even If You're Qualified)
You're applying to jobs that seem like a perfect fit — and hearing nothing. Here are the 7 most common reasons why, with specific fixes for each.
Find Out Why — FreeYour resume is failing ATS screening
90% of large employers use Applicant Tracking Systems to filter resumes before a human sees them. If your resume uses columns, tables, graphics, headers in text boxes, or unusual fonts — it may be completely unreadable to ATS software. Your resume gets automatically rejected, and you never know why.
Use a simple, single-column resume format. Check your ATS compatibility score with our free ATS Resume Checker. It scores your resume 0–100% and tells you exactly what to fix.
Your resume doesn't match the job description
ATS systems search for specific keywords from the job description. If your resume doesn't use the same language as the job posting — even if you have the skills — the system marks you as a poor match. "Database management" and "SQL administration" might mean the same thing to you, but not to ATS.
Use our Resume Match Score tool to see your keyword match percentage for any job. It shows you the exact keywords missing from your resume so you can add them.
You're applying to jobs you're significantly underqualified for
A match score below 50% usually means there's a significant gap between your qualifications and the role requirements. Applying to dozens of poor-fit jobs wastes time and builds rejection fatigue. Quality of applications matters more than quantity.
Check your match score before applying. Focus energy on jobs where you score 60%+. For your dream job at 40%, use your cover letter to directly address the gaps.
Your resume is generic — not tailored to each job
Sending the same resume to every job is the most common mistake job seekers make. Recruiters can spot a generic resume immediately. It signals low interest and low effort — both of which are dealbreakers before they even look at your qualifications.
Tailor every resume. Use our AI Resume Tailor to automatically customize your resume for each job description in minutes.
Your resume has formatting or readability issues
Long paragraphs, inconsistent formatting, missing contact information, unexplained employment gaps, or a resume longer than 2 pages for non-executive roles all cause immediate rejection. Recruiters spend 7 seconds on an initial scan.
Use bullet points, not paragraphs. Keep your resume to 1 page (entry-level) or 2 pages max. Use one of our 50 ATS-optimized templates that are proven to be readable.
You're missing critical qualifications — and not addressing them
Sometimes you're a 60–70% match — close, but missing one or two critical requirements. These gaps don't automatically disqualify you if you address them proactively in your cover letter and explain how your adjacent experience compensates.
Use our gap analysis tool to identify exactly which qualifications are missing. Then address them directly in your cover letter with transferable experience and a learning plan.
You're not applying through the right channels
Jobs posted on major boards receive 200–500+ applications. Many positions are filled through referrals or direct applications before they're even posted publicly. If you're only applying through job boards, you're competing in the hardest channel.
Apply directly on company websites as well as job boards. Use LinkedIn to connect with hiring managers before applying. Even a brief message can get your application flagged for human review.
